Red Barn Metal Roof

Frequently Asked Questions

Metal roofing is available in a wide range of energy efficient colored coatings that resist the growth of mold, mildew or fungus. Metal roofing is lightweight, strong and when properly applied can withstand very high wind speeds. Metal roofing lasts longer than conventional roofing, conserves energy and requires little maintenance.

In most cases, yes, since metal roofing weighs only 1/3 as much as shingles. This installation method also eliminates the costly problem of tearing off and disposing of old shingles. Metal roofing can be installed over 2″ x 4″ or 1″ x 4″ furring strips, 24″ o/c. In some cases, furring strips are not necessary and a layer of underlayment can be applied before installation. Remember to refer to local building codes before you begin installation

Metal roofing panels are attached to any structure by using coordinating, color-matched screws. We stock screws in various types and lengths to accommodate whatever your roofing project requires. All screws seal to the roofing panels with an EPDM rubber washer to prevent leaks

Yes. We stock foil-backed single bubble insulation that can be used under metal roofing. The foil-backed bubble insulation is a very effective product. It is a layer of air bubbles sandwiched between a foil layer and a white poly plastic layer. Bubble insulation has an R-value of approx. 9.2 and it blocks 97% of radiant heat energy. Using a radiant barrier with a properly ventilated home saves you money for years to come.

Some tools that you might require include: screw gun, cordless drill, metal cutting snips, tape measure. Cutting can best be done with an electric shear or metal cutting snips. We stock a variety of installation tools and accessories that are available for purchase.

A metal roof will be no noisier than what you hear when it rains now. When properly installed over underlayment and plywood, assuming you have drywall ceiling and attic insulation, you hardly hear it rain.

Metal roofing costs slightly more than a twenty (20) year asphalt/fiberglass shingle roof. Even though a greater initial cost, metal roofing will far outlast conventional shingle roofing. When compared to some of the current architectural and dimensional shingles, metal roofing is very competitively priced.

Yes. When material is received, bundled panels should be inspected for moisture. If there is moisture, the panels should be separated and dried. Reasonable care should be taken when handling painted surfaces during installation in order to protect the finish. Although the painted finish is tough and provides impact resistance, dragging panels across the surface of one another will almost certainly mar the finish.

Protective heavy-duty gloves should be worn when handling metal panels and trim accessories. Use extreme caution when walking, sitting, standing or kneeling on metal roofing to avoid falls. Metal roofing panels may have a light coating of oil on them to help aid in the manufacturing process and protect from moisture prior to installation. Metal roofing panels can be extremely slippery when wet. Please see our resources page for more information on the proper storage and handling procedures of metal roofing.

It doesn’t matter if your roofing material of choice is shingles, slate, wood, or metal; improper installation of any roof system will potentially lead to leaks or roof failure. A properly installed roofing system should never leak. The importance of making sure the installer you choose is well trained and experienced in installing metal roofing cannot be stressed enough.

Metal roofing is the preferred roofing choice in hail-prone areas. Hail causes conventional roofing materials to break, split and cause tear-off damage. Hail will not penetrate a metal roof.  All of our metal roofing panels are certified to meet UL standards for Class 4 impact resistance.
